Visiting the school

Parents and community members are always welcome to visit the school.  You may wish to observe a class in session or simply drop off your child’s lunch.  Whatever the reason for visiting, we do ask you to stop in at the office and let us know you are here.  We are required by law to be aware of who is in the school building at all times.

Parent Visitation Procedures

Parents are always welcome to visit their children's classrooms.  We request that parents contact their child's teacher to schedule an appointment for the visit.  Please bear in mind that visitors need to be respectful of the routines and practices of each classroom.  When visiting try to be as unobtrusive as possible so that the teacher can conduct the business of the class.

Picking up Children

As part of our continued attempts to increase security for our students and staff, the following procedures will be followed.  Adults who are picking up children any time before school is dismissed will wait in the lobby.  School personnel will inform the classroom teacher over the intercom or go to the classroom to accompany the child to the lobby.

Parking at School

When you are parking around the school, please do not park beside the buildingThis is a fire lane and we need to keep this open for the safety of all of our students.  It also forces classes to walk out in to the parking lot when they are going out to recess.

School Transportation

Riding a school bus is a privilege provided by the taxpayers of the Town of Fletcher and supervised by the School Board and their administrative designees, the Superintendent of Schools, the elementary school Principal and, when appropriate, the BFA Fairfax school administration.

The rules of conduct for students riding the busses reflect the appropriate safety considerations and the common courtesies expected in our society.  The driver is responsible for the safety and welfare of the student passengers.  He or she must have the cooperation and support of the School Board, the school staff, the parents, and the students if she/he is to successfully fulfill this responsibility.  Parents will be given copies of bus rules prior to the opening of school.

Bus Discipline

The bus drivers and the principal follow a set procedure to maintain discipline.  After informal attempts are made to correct dangerous or aggressive behavior a student enters the formal warning system.  This is a 4-step system:

Offense #1- a warning is issued and must be signed by the student’s parents before he/she is allowed to ride the bus.

Offense #2- a 2 day suspension of riding privileges is given

Offense #3- a 5 day suspension of bus privileges occurs.

Offense #4- the student cannot ride the bus until he/she appears before the school board at the next regularly scheduled meeting.  The board will determine consequences including possible revocation of riding privileges for the remainder of the school year.

Parents will be notified and consulted whenever possible.

Please see attached bus rules.

Change in After School Destination

If a change needs to be made in a child’s after school destination, a note must be sent by the parent/guardian to the school indicating the change.  Unless otherwise directed by a parent/guardian, a child’s after school destination will not be altered.   Please try to inform the office of any changes in your child's after school destination before 2:30.

Engine Idling

The Vermont legislature has enacted a bill prohibiting busses from idling while waiting to pick up students.  While the bill doesn’t address private vehicles, we ask that you follow the spirit of the law, as well.
