Focus on Writing

Fletcher Elementary School is pleased to begin a focus on writing during the 2020-2021 school year and into the future. Along with our other FWSU schools and collaborators, FES is prioritizing the teaching of literacy focusing on writing as an effective form of communication for all learners. Our multi-year goals include:

* Increasing writing opportunities every day, in every grade, for all learners.

* Creating a community of engaged, inspired writers that includes all students and adults.

* Through frequent writing opportunities for all learners, support our school community in seeing themselves as people who "live a writerly life" and have something important and meaningful to tell the world.

* Create a scope and sequence that promotes a continuum of writing instruction PK through grade 6.

We invite you to explore examples of our student work below, beginning with a four-book series of anthologies that include work by all of our students. This project integrated art, writing and science. Students created visual images that paired with their writing about the concept of "space." Please take a moment to explore these amazing works. Below that are examples of writing from each grade level. We will be adding to this collection over time.

Not all of these writing samples are polished work. Rather, they represent a variety of published writing and initial ideas, demonstrating the writing process and the excitement our students continue to build for telling stories through the written word.

Enjoy!
